ABOUT COMPTON MARTIN

The ancient village of Compton Martin lies in a pleasantly situated vale on a the north-eastern side of the Mendip Hills. An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty & a designated Conservation Area, its hills, woods, far-reaching meadows & water scenery create ever changing features to fascinate the eye.

Nowadays Compton Martin is renowned for its community activities and family atmosphere. It’s a great place to relax, whether sipping a
pint of Butcombe in the Ring O’ Bells, walking up the Coombe to the site of the old ochre mine or feeding the ducks on the pond.

The village of about 500 people, consists mainly of one street with
an associated network of side lanes where many charming houses
indicate the changing patterns of domestic architecture.
A spring rises near the church feeding the village duck pond
& ultimately becomes the River Yeo (& via Blagdon Lake) passes
through several villages on its way to the sea at Wick St Lawrence.

See the 12th century St Michael’s Church which is well worth investigating.
